Transkribus makes it possible to digitally transcribe handwritten documents. CDHA developed two experimental models for Icelandic, which are freely available.
Transkribus provides access to a wide range of models for text recognition in other languages, such as Latin.
An example of Transkribus reading a handwritten Icelandic document. The model used was developed specifically for Icelandic handwriting from the 19th century.
CDHA has purchased credits for Transkribus to process documents. Researchers can apply for access to these credits for well-defined research or infrastructure projects.
Example projects using Transkribus:
- Corpus of Early Modern Icelandic, funded by the Infrastructure Fund in 2024.
- Archive Arnamagnæana, led by Þórunn Sigurðardóttir at the Árni Magnússon Institute, received a 200-million ISK grant from the A.P. Møller og Hustru Chastine Mc-Kinney Møllers Fond til almene Formaal in 2023.
- Una Haraldsdóttir, a student in History, used Transkribus for a project funded by the Student Innovation Fund to transcribe diaries and publish excerpts from them over the summer.
The project was funded by the Infrastructure Fund.
