The cultural heritage database Sarpur provides access to the collections of around 60 museums across Iceland. Originally launched in 1998, Sarpur is now in its third version. However, the current system no longer meets modern standards for data access and usability.

To address this, MSHL secured funding from the Infrastructure Fund to acquire and implement a new collection management system for Sarpur. The selected system, MuseumPlus by Zetcom, is currently being installed, with data migration set to be completed in 2025.

MSHL has applied for further funding to finalise the upgrade with the purchase of a Digital Asset Management System (DAMS). This will enhance accessibility and improve research-related data processing.

Above, you can see the registration and access entry for the Álfapottur artefact in Sarpur. Currently, only watermarked 2D images are available for viewing.
Below is a 3D-scanned version of the same artefact on Sketchfab. The new version of Sarpur will support the display of 3D models, videos, audio files, and other formats that are not currently available in the system.
